NAMUR has published a new recommendation entitled "Ethernet - APL - Security Advisory". This working group practice provides practical advice on the implementation of Ethernet APL installations, taking IT and OT security aspects into account. It is aimed at users, engineers, planners and manufacturers and is available to download free of charge.
Focus on cyber security and Ethernet APL
The document is dedicated to cyber security in connection with Ethernet APL and looks at typical automation infrastructures in process chemistry. It is aimed at operational specialists, including IT administrators, who do not necessarily need to have specialised training in the field of information technology. The focus is on practical solutions and is not intended for security experts.
About Ethernet-APL
Ethernet-APL (Advanced Physical Layer) is a network infrastructure specially developed for the process industry. It enables the broadband connection of field devices over long distances, combines power supply and communication signals on a single two-wire cable and can also be used safely in potentially explosive atmospheres. Ethernet-APL can also utilise some existing cabling. As an extension of the established Ethernet standard, it offers high reliability and robustness for industrial applications.
The technology was developed to create a seamless connection up to field level and thus replace traditional 4-20 mA systems, fieldbuses such as PROFIBUS or Foundation Fieldbus as well as HART in the long term. It extends standardised Ethernet communication to field instrumentation and sets new standards in process automation.
Target group and area of application
The AK-Praxis focusses on Ethernet APL installations in the process industry, both in existing plants and in new plants. The PROFINET protocol is taken as the basis. The target group is particularly engineers and planners who are not specialised IT/OT security experts.
